On 11th December, the Chitralian Climate Action Society University of Chitral led by Muzaffar Ali Baig (Lecturer in statistics), in collaboration with Contemporary Associates Islamabad (KP EPA Environmental Consultant), held a consultative workshop on the draft of the Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan for District Chitral Lower. Consultant Expert Prof. Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan presented the draft of the Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan and highlighted key areas such as agriculture, livestock, forestry, health, land, and infrastructure, where adaptation measures are essential.
The workshop provided a platform for experts, educators, and students to collaborate and contribute to shaping the sustainable future of Chitral Lower. The workshop was attended by faculty members, students, representatives of KP EPA, government line departments, and NGOs. Participants made valuable contributions to shaping an effective climate change adaptation plan for Chitral's future by critically evaluating its limitations, assessing its effectiveness and providing valuable suggestions for improving the draft. Major suggestions were made including adaptation measures for GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Floods) and meteorological data, greater inclusion of women, and enhanced ecosystem adaptation strategies. One key gap identified was the absence of climate change adaptation measures in the education sector.
Mr. Afsar Khan, EPA Director Malakand, directed the consultant to incorporate suggestions of the participants into the final draft of the climate change adaptation plan.
Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sana Ullah, emphasized the significance of including academia in the development of such policies to ensure their positive impacts.
