International Snow Leopard Day, 23rd October 2019 celebrated at the University of Chitral. The symposium was organized by the Department of Zoology, University of Chitral, in collaboration with Snow Leopard Foundation, Pakistan and Pakistan Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program. The theme of the day was “Innovative conservation education for enhanced tolerance and co-existence”. Dr. Badshah Munir Bukhari, Project Director University of Chitral was Chief Guest on the occasion while Mr. Muhammad Idress DFO, Chitral Wildlife Division participated as the special guest. Speakers from various circles of conservation and academia delivered presentations and lectures highlighting different aspects of snow leopard conservation. Mr. Ejaz ur Rehman, Area Manager, Snow Leopard Foundation briefed the audience about the conservation challenges the elusive cat is facing and the activities carried out by the PSLEP project to tackle the challenges. Mr. Shah Fahad Ali Khan, HoD Department of Zoology, University of Chitral delivered a lecture presentation on biological and ecological aspects of snow leopard conservation. Mr. Sajid Khan of the Sociology department highlighted how snow leopard conservation can be linked with the socio-economic uplifting of rural communities particularly women. Mr. Ajaz Ahamd Assistant director NTFP, Chitral Forest Division discussed the impact of climate change on the snow leopard habitat and the outcomes of the Billion tree tsunami project which is helping to minimize the threat of climate change. Dr. Tajud Din, Assistant Professor Department of the Education University of Chitral emphasized the planet oriented education system and a futurist model of teaching which should be action-oriented, at various levels of education. Chief Guest Dr. Badshah Munir Bukhari, encouraged the program and vowed his full support for such programs in the future.
